Where an LED strip makes the difference in a cabinet

  • Wardrobe and walk-in closet: light along the rail or under the shelves, so colors and fabrics are clearly visible.
  • Display cabinet: crockery, glassware or collector items in the spotlight, at home or in a shop.
  • Bookcase and wall unit: a warm glow under every shelf for atmosphere in the living room.
  • Shopfitting: shelves and displays that show off products.

Which strip do you choose?

  • 12V for short lengths per cabinet, with a small plug-in adapter. See the 12V LED strips.
  • 24V if you connect several cabinets or a whole wall unit to one power supply. See the 24V LED strips.
  • COB if the strip is visible, for example under a glass shelf: one even line without dots. With CRI 90+, clothing, wood and products look natural. See the COB LED strips.
  • Color temperature: 3000K warm white for living-room cabinets and display cases, 4000K for wardrobes and shops.

How to mount an LED strip in a cabinet

  • Stick the strip at the front of the shelf or on the side of the cabinet, with the light aimed inwards, so you do not look into the LEDs.
  • Use a narrow profile with a diffuser for a clean finish.
  • Link the shelves with strip cable and connectors, without soldering. See the LED strip connectors.
  • Operate the lighting with a remote or wall panel, or dim it with a controller. See the dimmers and controllers.

Frequently asked questions about cabinet LED strips

Does an LED strip get warm in a cabinet?

An LED strip barely gets warm and is safe for clothing and wood. At higher wattages, an aluminum profile helps dissipate the heat.

How much light do I need in a cabinet?

For atmosphere in a bookcase or display case, 400 to 500 lumens per meter is enough; for a wardrobe or shop shelf, 800 to 1,000 lumens per meter.

How do I connect several cabinets?

Link the strips to one power supply with strip cable and connectors. Add up the watts and divide by 0.8 to choose the power supply. See the LED strip power supplies.
